Accurate Images – High performance AF and metering systems The EOS 7D features a 19-point cross-type AF sensor, enabling photographers to achieve accurate shots and optimise composition options. This improved AF system offers a range of manual and automatic settings including Zone and Spot AF to track and capture subjects quickly and accurately. AF settings are highly customisable, allowing for rapid reaction to changes in the scene. Different AF points can be set for vertical or horizontal orientation, so photographers can automatically switch between landscape and portrait shots without touching a button. The EOS 7D also incorporates a new metering system. The Focus Colour Luminance metering system (iFCL) intelligently measures focus, colour and luminance, across 63 zones. Complementing the 19 AF points, the dual layer sensor is able to gather information from each distinct zone to obtain a more accurate and consistent exposure. Focusing rails are essential accessories for macro photography, which requires precise distance modifications and a steady hand, as well as other situations where accurate camera positioning is crucial.

This is a generic focusing rail slider that is sold by numerous vendors at many websites under several different names. I think it emanates from Hong Kong. Who knows where they get them from.

I've used it a couple of times and I'm generally pleased so far. The materials look good and it feels solid.

A few observations:

1. It's pretty heavy. Shipping weight was supposedly 1 pound, but I think somebody rounded that off in the down direction. It feels heavier than that. It really needs a good tripod and it's not the kind of thing you want to carry around all the time.

2. The adjustments are not terribly fine. It's certainly no micrometer. I put a few drops of military grade weapons oil on the teeth to smooth things out, but that made little difference.

3. Attaching the camera is a bit difficult because the tripod screw nob is close to some of the other adjusting nobs. Quick release plates can help alleviate this problem, but that adds more weight and more things that can "wiggle" when taking photos. In closeups, that's really bad.

I took several pics of a small cactus flower about an inch in diameter using a small Nikon 50mm prime lens and a short extension tube. Working distance was about 3 inches from the flower. The rails help a lot with focus and framing, but a tiny rotation of the back and forth adjustment was enough to knock the camera completely out of focus. I used an old Vivitar tripod. Next time I'll use a much heavier Induro A313 tripod and a Manfrotto tilt head with the rail. That should allow use of larger lenses and result in sharper photos.

First chance to test out my Canon 550D/T2i while out in Crete, in a little east coast town called Agios Nikolaos. Took a walk out on the beach & seawall around 5.30am for the sunrise. Crete is a fantastic destination, it's got azure blue seas, lovely people, is safe for single travellers and has night life if you want it or chill if you don't! And it really is absolutely stunning! I'm used to cameras like Sony Z1/Z7 which even though they're small can still be quite bulky. Unlike the 550D which is lightweight (depending what lens you have on it) and easy to tuck into tight spots, so you can be very creative with composition whilst filming. Focus can be tricky when there's bright sunlight (my next purchase will be the Zacuto Z-Finder) but if you work static you can setup the focus with the viewfinder then switch to record. I've never been able to justify the expense to invest in top of the range lenses either but even with the cheaper lenses you can get some stunning results! The 18 - 55mm comes with the 550D in a good deal bundle and I'm sure by professional standards its a no-go but for me it was affordable, is nice and wide, so a good lens to get me started!
